Pure Skies pollution control equipment reduced PM2.5 and PM10 about 54% and 49%, respectively, at a satsang.

The problem:

Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas on the banks of the sacred Ganga River, Rishikesh has been a center of spiritual and religious activities since ancient times. The beloved guru Shri Mooji Baba conducts a satsang (spiritual fellowship) annually, during the month of February and early March.

The sacred river Ganga is particularly powerful in holy cities such as Rishikesh. Unfortunately, air pollution is also high due to large crowds and air trapping in the valley. PC: Outlook India. 

Despite its divine location, Rishikesh also has poor air quality!

Levels of particulate pollutants – PM2.5 and PM10 – were quite high inside the ashram (97 mcg/m3 and 148 mcg/m3, respectively). These are well above the National Ambient Air Quality (NAAQ) standards for India, and more than 5-7 times the standards of the World Health Organization.  

During the satsang, the ashram regularly conducts discourses and events hosting up to 3000 people daily. These devotees would be exposed to high indoor pollution levels, resulting in health hazards.

 

The solution:

One Pure Skies 3000 unit was installed in the Satsang Hall at the ashram to improve the air quality for the devotees.

The system was configured to handle particulate pollutants (PM10 and PM2.5).

To quantify the air pollution levels and understand trends, air quality monitoring was performed for a period of 7-days (baseline period) prior to Pure Skies being powered on, then continuously thereafter.

The pollutant levels were monitored using a third-party air quality monitor (Airveda Pvt Ltd, Gurgaon) to help the customer understand the efficacy of Pure Skies, as well as to provide real time data for optimizing the smart technology in each Pure Skies unit. The air quality monitor was installed on the opposite side of the hall, away from the Pure Skies unit.

It took just a few hours to complete the installation, covering an area of 20,000 sq. ft area. Equipment was plugged in, connected to the GSM network. Technical requirements included only routine power supply (ordinary 10A sockets) and just 2 sq. ft. of floor space.

Devic Earth monitors the performance of each unit 24x7. Pure Skies' built in smart technology allows each unit to understand air quality patterns at its location.

 

The outcome:

After Pure Skies was powered On, a steady improvement was observed in the air quality.

At the end of the two weeks Pure Skies-On period, the levels of PM2.5 and PM10 were reduced by 54% & 49%, respectively (Figure 1). Levels of these same pollutants elsewhere in Rishikesh (outside the Satsang Hall) remained relatively unchanged during this same period. There was no rain during this period.
